It actually makes sense to use something like Squirrel Mail instead of a
desktop app like Thunderbird. All the emails will remain on the server and
this will help from the perspective of keeping backups,
Even with thunderbird (or any other IMAP client), the mail can be
kept on the server by (simple) configuration choices.
True. I was using thunderbird with an IMAP server for a while. The problem
will be if the laptop is stolen in which case all the emails could get
into wrong hands.
