Hi,
We at InfyLUG, the Infosys[1] Linux User Group have been working on a
Firefox extension called LiveURLs [2] which lets users create links to
specific content on web pages. The concept is based on a technical
whitepaper[3] on web technologies published by InfyLUG and which will
be presented as a poster[4] at the 15th World Wide Web Conference[5]
in Edinburgh, Scotland.
Some benefits of LiveURL's:
* Sharing selected content on web pages is just a right click away.
* Peer - Peer Sharing - no centralized entity required.
* Usable in the same manner as existing URLs.
* Browsers which do not support LiveURLs still show the whole page.
The code and technology[6] is still in a POC stage with the
implementation-standard details not finalized. The source code,
licensed under the GPL, can be picked up from CVS [7]. We welcome
suggestions, brickbats, praise and most importantly bug reports [8].
Please join the liveurls mailing list [9] for discussion on further
development of this extension.
We hope to garner support for this concept and to see it as a default
feature in all browsers.
