The linux kernel need not be recomppiled on each and every machine where
it is to run. You can compile on one machine and then transfer the
kernel (and its associated modules) to the target machine and update
your bootloader.
Alternatively you can try passing the mem=XXX option to the linux
kernel for a no-recompile solution
