Thanks for the tips, but I'm curious: Which desktop distro of Linux can
run reasonably fast with X and say, a browser, in 16 MB on a P60?
I am not sure about these. But you can try link2-x11, dillo for
browsers. x11 version of link2 is close to gecko in rendering.
I second that suggestion. I run Slackware 8.1 on my old P-60
desktop (16 MB RAM), with GNUstep environment (WindowMaker, GWorkspace.app,
GNUMail.app, wdm and some wmaker dockapps). For web browsing, I would prefer
the hacked links web browser from twibright labs
(
http://atrey.karlin.mff.cuni.cz/~clock/twibright/links/ ;) or w3mme (if
you are willing to stay happy without javascript support).
By the way, I've tweaked Slackware 8.1 on my old machine to an extent that
the last PID when I run 'ps ax' command within a terminal remains below
80 immediately after system boot. It also runs XFree86 3.3 series which is
lighter (and less featured) than XFree86 4.x or X.org series.
Oh well, most of the times when I'm on that box, I'm on emacs, which is
the *true* desktop environment for me :-)
And yes, Netscape 4 is bloated for my box (not to mention that it
used to crash pretty often with "Bus Error").
