Hi LUG members,
I started with Ubuntu 8.04 but never enjoyed GNOME looks so moved to
KDE till memory hog named KDE 4 came out, even KDE 4.1 was slow on my
system(512MB RAM, 1.73GHz core duo), so I moved to Xubuntu whose light
interface runs pretty well on my system apart from the fact that X
server crashes [~once a week], I verified with other friends using
Xubuntu that XFCE is not very stable and crashes do occur. (I have no
intentions to debug or debate why these crashes occur, so I reuqest
you to please do not debate on that).
I wonder which releases do LUG members recommend with following four features
1) User has good enough experience with system(most work is done from
command line) the only reason to start X server for me is to run
Firefox and pidgin
2) Plain interface similar to XFCE but does not crash
3) Is not memory hog (like KDE 4)
4) must be fast(user hates compiz and any such flying effects)
I have heard that archlinux is fast and simple but unstable, any
comments on that?
(or may be on BSD based distros?)
