Well, if you think a colourful Anaconda based installer is the only
thing that is user friednly, Debian isn't! However, I believe the
Debian installer is very simple, though not aesthetic.
It was said that a chicken could install Debian Potato. All you had
to do was peck at the Enter key.
The Debian installer is also very flexible. I've installed Potato on a
SGI Indy box with one internal HDD running IRIX and no removeable
storage. Netbooting the kernel + installer image using tftp and dhcp
right from the Indy's firmware prompt was just too easy.
I've also installed Debian on couple of SGI and SUN boxes which had
no graphics cards. The console was connected through a serial port.
And some G4 macs as well.
The first phase boot strapping and installation is very quick -- takes
~15 mins on modern hardware (on the same hardeware, the Solaris
installer took ~20 mins to just boot up).
The installation steps are consistent across all architectures. If you've
installed Debian on PC, you should be able to install it on any other
arch without too much difficulty.
