Try this.. Account settings should be set as follows.
Login ID : your Gmail ID ( full email id e.g. name@xxxxxxxxx )
Pwd : your pwd
Encryption required : checked
Ignore SSL : checked
Resource: <leave empty>
Priority: <default 0 >
Server: talk.google.com
Port : 5222
click "apply" and click "close"
You have a drop down saying "Offline" click that and select "Available".
That should fix it.
