Don't you get support for this?
Are you booting from a 2.6 Linux kernel? The 2.6 Linux
kernels have SATA drivers and they should detect your
hard-disk. In Debian Sarge, you can pass linux26 to
the "boot:" prompt to boot a Linux 2.6 kernel during
installation.
All recent distros do boot with a 2.6 Linux kernel.
