While getting a board with DOM may be an issue, I think using a low
capacity USB stick on a USB boot supported system would be a good
alternative.
Pluggable IDE/SATA DOMs are available from vendors who specialize in
server grade systems. I am sure Chennai has a vibrant server vendor
channel.
IMO, USB sticks are OK for end user consumer type solutions [1], they
are slow and failure rate is high. For a file server I would not
recommend USB stick.
[1] I use USB sticks for my Atom based desktop clients.
