Thanks my dear friends, for your support! I have successfully upgraded
my kernel from 2.4.18.X to 2.6.8.1. it is working fine, i can feel some
good improvement in speed also.. ( is it so, or is it to my blind
eye?... :) :) )
After long struggling as a newbie, At last i followed a simple method
which made my job easy. i.e
1. copy the 2.4.18.X's .config file to 2.6.8.1's root directory (THIS
STRATEGY HELPED ME TO SOLVE THE DEVICE DRIVER LOADING ISSUES FOR MOST OF
THE HARDWARES - Here only I had got stuck up previously!!!!)
2. run "make menuconfig" on copied .config and add a additional features
or missing features carefully.
3. Then "make bzImage; make modules; make modules_install; make install".
4. If you don't use grub, make an entry for new kernel in
/etc/lilo.conf and run "lilo"
Hope it may be useful for others also.
Thanks,
Regards
