Maybe the real issue would lie in the Xserver configuration.
VESA display will work with Inten 845 chipset, but I don't know why
is it hanging
It is maybe due to the fact that the framebuffer is not being setup by
the default value in /etc/lilo.conf or /boot/grub/menu.lst
Try passing this option to the kernel while booting up via the boot
loader, `video=vesa:800x600-16@60'
YMMV.
