That does not mean I give something substandard to my dad. Its
important to let your people know what they are losing, even if it
does not matter too much. What if he gave it to his friends son, a
gaming freak?? That sort of assumption is not good for any
professional, of any field and there are words to describe such
intentions. Sorry, your reply really hurts.
That was not my intention. I have been using a laptop with ATI
graphics card and I didn't even notice I was missing something
(obviously I was not playing any games that require 3D support - I
only play GNOME mines, once in a while) because the Free Driver that
came with my distro was good enough. And the experience was not
substandard.
It is not our problem that NVIDIA and ATI does not release Free Driver
and not even release the specs. Now we recommend everyone to use Intel
graphics cards, which has Free drivers for 3D support. When people
chose not to buy NVIDIA and ATI and go for Intel they will realise.
Now when Dell is going to release their laptops with GNU/Linux
pre-installed and thye will go with only those hardware which work. So
this isn't much of an issue once more people start pre-installing
GNU/Linux like Dell.
You don't have to give substandard thing for your dad, but a system
with Intel motherboard and Intel graphics card with 3D support.
