There are just so many applications/tools you can use
on GNU/Linux to learn anything from desktop usage,
programming, system administration, network
administration. Your learning curve will be really

Seriously, consider the current state of IT in
India.

It is our duty to educate the masses, not, drench them
in the gutter and make them whine about heavy
licenses, BSODs, system crashes...

I would go with GNU/Linux environments for learning.
By starting to set up the systems, the students
themselves can learn about the environment. It could
be their first course!
