We tried this few years back, me,suraj,sriram karra and few others.
We had a separate project called demo@schools. Suraj spent Saturdays
in a a neighbourhood school for about 2-3 months. Unfortunately,
Saturdays became working days for him and whole thing died. Based on
the experience I suggest
1.Physical Volunteers - At least one person should be regularly
co-ordinating with each school atleast on Saturday.
2.We need to conduct seminar first for Teachers.
3. I was planning for summer course of 2-3 days for school teachers
in my neighbourhood, but couldn't succeed due to infrastructure
constraints. If someone can arrange for summer courses of short
duration to teachers we can achieve better results.
4.Freeduc- a customised knoppix with educational software is good
starting point.
5.Too much technical topic should not be takenup. It can be done for
a small subset of students.
6. We need atleast a ILUGC letter pad to approach schools schools
with no previous contact.
7. It is easier to approach and succeed with small schools - as they
are less bureaucratic. One of our volunteers made 4-5 visits to a
premier school in Chennai, each time waiting hours for Principal's
darshan still couldn't get permission.
