Also mention ideo chipset. I am presuming the connection is DSUB-15
(analog VGA connector).
Mine is Intel Dualcore processor and DG41WV motherboard.
Make sure your cable is good and connected tight at both ends.
It is connected properly and i rechecked it.
The newer Xorg do an autodetect and seem to override xorg.conf if it
exists (from my observation).
You mention you have reconfigured xorg in your OP. Can you tell us
what you reconfigured. Did you set the ModeLines manually?
I did Xorg :1 -configure to create xorg.conf file and copied to /etc/X11
directory.
One more point to add
When i see my display settings it shows monitor as unknown.
