[1] How best to protect a monitor/system from moisture ?
a) Use it in a dry/dehumidified room, such as an air-conditioned
room.
b) Try to leave them on at all times, so the there is some residual
warmth that prevents condensation. Most monitors these days are energy-
saving, so they will not consume much power (<15W) when they're on
standby.
[2] Does X or any software has anything to do with this ?
No, if it's within the sync ranges for your monitor, there's
no effect on reliability.
The problems in Madras can be traced to dust, moisture and sulphur
dioxide in the air. If you're close to the sea, add salt to the
mix.
