Hi,
My thoughts below:

* How do we get the recognitions that it is we who
developed the project?
If you submit a proposal to sourceforge.net and if
your project is accepted, you basically have a domain
for your project, which includes:
- admin rights to maintain your CVS repository
- mailing list for users to report bugs or suggestions
By doing a FSF or OSS project, you can quote your
project lead or project manager or give contact of
fellow developers, with the project link as reference.
* What is the best route to take to do something
like Kernel hacking.
It will take years.
You will first have to be strong in:
1/ computer architecture
2/ operating systems
3/ data structures and algorithms
3/ learn, and then master c and assembly (ARCH
dependent)
4/ learn to write device drivers
5/ finally, enter kernel development
Knowledge of compilers, linkers and assemblers is also
useful.
* How long does it take to complete a typical
project (considering i
hav read the related materials)?
Depends on the scope of the project, what you would
like to implement, and your proficient skills.
* What FOSS projects the are available to us to work
on?
Check the projects here:
http://sourceforge.net
http://freshmeat.net
http://savannah.gnu.org
Start of by writing small modules or plugins or
extensions to existing projects. With experience you
can try to attempt for massive coding projects.
Have fun,
K Shakthi
