The current crop of Atom boards have the 425 and 525 CPUs @ 1.8GHz.
They are multi threaded; 425 has one core with 2 threads, 525 two
cores + two thread per core (total 4).
Gigabyte has boards with IDE and 4SATA II ports, and copper Gb LAN :)
So yes, conceivably one could make a small office file server, a
router or a firewall or an asterisk PBX box. IMO, the boards have the
horsepower to drive small enterprise grade apps.
What are all the difficulties on that?
On the other hand, I have had board failure issues (the first gen.
ones from Intel) - so I would not recommend them for mission critical
apps.
Avoid the fanless solutions from Intel - they are meant for Nettop
setups and you could run into thermal issues, especially if you choose
the Nettop cabinets.

1. First define your requirements
2. The look for the right solution.
