“Every Dog Has Their Day” is an installation honoring the end of life and death
of our animal familiars. It is inspired by the experience of our own journeys
caring
for our dogs as they travel(ed) toward their end. This care-taking experience is
an offering and opportunity to celebrate their teachings: their ability to
live in
the present and to live death as it comes. Here death is a process we steward
and witness, this is “ a training ground for the dissolution that awaits us
all. “
Said Osio builds an altar for his dog Levi with photos and found materials.
Maria Epes creates life-size drawings of her dog Ashe on sheets of handmade
paper
approximately 3 x 6 feet (made at Swannanoa Paper) that include major systems
of his body: skeletal, nervous, circulatory, respiratory, digestive, picturing
him in
life and death. These drawings will be buried with him, wrapped around his body.
The installation will include an altar created to hold memory cards for anyone
who would like to write a name, memorialize any creature, and place it in the
small animal coffin. May our familiars train us to play our part in this world.
There will be at ritual on Dec 1 from 6-7pm to celebrate and honor our animals
with drummers playing their songs and rhythms. This ritual will create an
opportunity for any and all to speak, a spiritual sendoff for us all.
