Rich,

thanks for your thorough and fair-minded feedback. Good feedback always includes positive and negative. Could you send a problem report after you try to connect to one of your network folders so LevelStar can see the exact error you're getting?

Thanks,
Jenny

Greetings everyone!
When I think about the Icon and Braille Plus, I am amazed at all of the
incredible functionality we have. For example, what other device will allow you to download books from Bookshare, automatically unpack them, and create the folder structure for you? What other device will allow you to download
a book from NLS and automatically unpack the book (if you place it in the
correct folder) without the user having to do anything? There is no other
PDA on the market whose web browser is as robust as the browser we find on
the Icon and Braille Plus. And what other device has an RSS reader and
podcast program? Certainly, there are bugs, but this device has so many
examples of software design excellence that simply amaze me! Features that
no one else has ever thought of! When you are making an audio recording,
the unit will vibrate if you are "clipping"! A little thing, but so useful! The powerful music player, the excellent file management utility, I could go
on and on! And consider, this device is hardly a year old! When the
docking station begins to ship, the Icon will be the most versatile
blindness product on the market today!
I would now like to share my observations about file sharing. And, please
note, although they are not particularly positive, they do not serve to
negate anything I have thus far written in this message.
First, I simply am unable to see the other computers on my network.
Although these computers can and do share files and folders with one
another, the Icon always gives me a connection error message when I try to
connect. The three computers on my network are all running Windows XP Pro,
so Vista is not an issue here.
Now, here is another interesting wrinkle. My PC can see the two folders I
am sharing on my Icon's hard drive. My music folder, and my library folder
can be seen by my desktop computer.
However, I attempted to copy a folder containing an NLS book from the Icon
to my desktop machine, and this operation timed out repeatedly. I also
noticed that my Icon kept disconnecting from the wireless network. This
behavior (disconnecting) never manifests itself when the Icon is retrieving
email, surfing the web, downloading podcasts, or streaming audio. But it
seems to occur quite frequently when I am attempting to work with files and
folders on the network. Perhaps attempting to copy a large file from the
Icon to the desktop machine puts too great a strain on the unit, I don't
know. Another problem is that if you have forgotten to disable the
inactivity time out function, your Icon will turn off during the copying
process. It would be nice if the machine could detect that although no keys
were being pressed, that there was indeed activity.
These are my observations thus far, and as stated earlier, they in no way
should be interpreted as Icon bashing, I simply find them perplexing.
In closing I wish to thank Levelstar and APH for a wonderful update, and I
am confident that many of the issues that have been discussed on this list
will be resolved.
