Yes, advanced settings would be  agood thing.  does this fall under the 
heading of verbosity?

No!I really dislike that the feature is gone, it's like dumbing down the
machine. Make it a user setting then. There should be an advanced
settings area where the geeky things could be put. Users who don't care
could completely ignore them but for some of us the info would still be
available.
