Hi Arpad, I believe that is what Ken meant (correct me if I am wrong Ken). After reviewed by the IBIS subcommittee - it will be IBIS approved and be called ibis_xyz.bci - where xyz is the requested name. Thanks, Ambrish. -----Original Message----- From: ibis-macro-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:ibis-macro-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Muranyi, Arpad Sent: Tuesday, October 07, 2014 5:44 PM To: IBIS-ATM (ibis-macro@xxxxxxxxxxxxx) Subject: [ibis-macro] Re: IBIS-ATM teleconference - October 7, 2014 - CANCELLED > follow up to Todd's question from last week Ken, Thanks for your answer. I think there was another aspect to Todd's question in addition to what you answered. Is it OK to call that "private-public" protocol an IBIS approved BCI file? (Todd, Walter, correct me if I used the wrong words, but I thought this was a big part of your question)... So responding here in email. OK, so the intent of posting BCI files to the IBIS website for industry standard protocols (ex. PCI Express, 10Gbase-KR, etc.), is to make them available to all AMI model developers, enabling them to code their AMI models to include backchannel functionality for these standards, and thereby enabling interoperability between AMI models from different AMI model suppliers for those standards. If an AMI model developer has control over both Tx and Rx AMI model development, they can also make up their own BCI file, as long as it adheres to IBIS-legal syntax, and define their own Protocol_Specific parameters that the Tx and Rx understand. We have been calling this a "private protocol". Any IBIS-compliant EDA tool should be able to use those AMI models along with the BCI file, and everything should just work. This is all perfectly legal, and you don't need to get the BCI file posted to the IBIS website or anything. It could just be distributed with the AMI model kit from the AMI model supplier. OK, so with that backdrop, your hinge question from last week: ############################### If SISoft worked together with some SerDes IP suppliers, and put together Tx and Rx AMI models along with a BCI file for a private protocol, would SISoft have the option to provide the BCI file to the IBIS sub-committee, and have it posted to the IBIS website? ############################### I don't see any reason why not. You wouldn't have to do that, as you could just give the BCI file out as part of the AMI model kit. But if you wanted to make it public, and maybe attract others to adopt it, I don't see any issues with that. It would have to be of legal IBIS syntax and pass IBIS review just like an IEEE standard BCI file, but then I don't see any problem with posting it on the IBIS website.
