We're going to need IASL members to be listed on the proposal as participators
when we send the proposal to the Misk Foundation. We will need school
librarians who will be willing to have their students look in their communities
to find a problem to solve and to work to address the problem. The purpose of
the research committee is to develop the handbook for school librarians so they
can conduct these projects. This development will be done virtually as most of
the project is virtual.
One of the key elements is that records will be kept of what students decide to
do and how they go about it, and finally, how they evaluate the progress they
made. The research team will also be available to help school librarians, their
students and teachers, find the research they need in print and perhaps to
suggest experts who can help address the problem. We are asking for funding to
establish a website to post for all.
School librarians participating in this project will be using the handbooks
provided to launch their projects. They will sharing information between
students around the world trying to help each other make progress. The handbook
has the format for recording progress throughout the project, how to post
questions to the list, etc.
This is designed to be a low cost effort so that it can be replicated in other
schools around the world. That is why the word "volunteer" is a part of the
invitation. If we were to ask for a huge sum of money to support a single idea,
it wouldn't be easily replicated in other schools. We think that with the
technology we have at our disposal we make can make finding information and
helping schools move projects forward, that it will be possible that students
can find their solutions to be affordable within their communities.
Our only anticipated concern about the use of technology is that some schools
may not have access to wifi and that will be critical, so we will add that
expense into our proposal. Other than the building of the website, this entire
project is one for volunteers.
If this is funded, we have every hope that it can help students in other
communities solve bigger issues.
If anyone has questions about this simple introduction, please ask.

Dear colleagues,
We have identified an opportunity for an IASL team to submit a grant proposal
to the Misk Foundation of Saudi Arabia under its Challenge to help students
identify and initiate projects to make their communities better.
Because we represent students around the world, the grant-seeking team will
position teacher-librarians as the ideal facilitators as youth identify
problems and seek information toward solutions. Project results and methods
will be shared around the world so that other schools can do similar projects.
Our concept involves two advisory teams: The Research Team will create the
materials and electronic project records for use by interested schools and
analyze the results. The Schools Team will help identify schools, librarians,
students, and teachers to be a part of our project.
We will send the Request for Proposal (RFP) from the Misk Foundation and a very
basic draft for how we might address this project to any interested IASL
members.
If we are funded, the initial meetings will be held virtually with any others
at organized during another event so that we do not use the funds for travel.
This project will help students learn to get questions answered and share
information virtually, so we should be able to build the project the same way.
Like IASL's GIggleIT Project and International School Library Month, this
project will be organized by IASL members and open to all interested school
librarians worldwide.
If you would like to volunteer for this project, please tell Blanche
(blanche.woolls@xxxxxxxx) whether you would like to be part of the Research
Team, Schools Team, or both.
Time is of the essence! Please send your interest by 5 April. We have a
proposal submission deadline of 2 May 2018 and want to list our Team members in
the grant.
Thank you,
