Dear Helen et all,
Thank you all for starting this discussion that I have followed with great
interest.
As you might know, Helen, in my role as Vice President Association
Operations in IASL I've put a lot of energy in trying to solve some of the
issues raised, e.g. developing a partner member programme. This program
includes that associations sign a partner membership cpntract with IASL
based on the Zones and all members of that national, regional or local
association become partner members for 1$ per individual. All these
individuals have all the benefits of an individual membership with a few
exceptions in leadership roles in IASL.
As far as I know there are two associations that have such a contract, The
Manitoba School Library Association and the Dutch School Library Association
BMO. The means that there are already approx. 600 partner members and
doubles the current membership numbers. If IASL finds more partner
associations to sign partner membership contracts, it will reach out to far
more school library professionals, build a great community of members and
partner members and addresses some of the issues raised in the emails below.
Unfortunately the board and exec of IASL have not fully adopted this
programme although the AGM in Jamaica (2011) was very enthusiastic about it.
I still believe this is a missed opportunity for IASL and the School library
community worldwide. I truly hope that the AGM will put this back on the
agenda and decides that this programmes deserves the full support of the
leadership team, so we can start growing the membership and influence the
global impact of IASL.

I agree with a lot of what Simon has suggested in his original message, i.e.
that the IASL should be more open about information about the organisation.
I would like to see these questions answered. So much information is for
members only.
As Maria Jose points out, the membership is aging. What is the average age
of members?
Also, I agree with Maria Jose that a lot of information is not distributed
to associate members (through their national associations). It is my
understan ding that only 3 associate members (representatives) from national
associations receive information directly from the IASL. In countries where
the local language is not English, this means that IASL's information
sometimes needs to be translated and then forwarded to other associate
members. This takes time and energy. Often it does not happen.
Can associate members access the "Members Only" section of the website, the
Newsletter, the Facebook page etc., or can this only be accessed by the 3
selected representatives? This is such a pity, since it prevents many
interested people from learning more about the IASL and its activities.
Simon asks what do school librarians (especially the younger ones) want from
the IASL as an international organisation? How can it help them with their
work? How can members from many countries throughout the world help each
other? It would be a good idea to survey this.
I think we would all agree that it is a good idea for the IASL to have a
membership drive - to let school librarians throughout the world know what a
great organisation this is. From previous correspondence between myself and
the IASL Board, I gather that there are not a lot of members who are
prepared to volunteer to organise this kind of campaign. Perhaps the Board
should discuss asking for volunteers? Who has time, energy and enough
passion for school librarianship to do this?
I agree with Simon that annual membership of the IASL - $100 - represents a
large amount of money for school librarians throughout the world. Even
though this fee is adjusted to members who live in A, B or C zones,
nevertheless so many working school librarians, especially those living in
some developing countries, do not have this money to spare, especially those
who are trying to support a family on a small salary. It is also virtually
impossible for many of these people to attend conferences, because of the
costs involved. Some receive an award from the IASL, but in many cases this
barely covers the transport, let alone the accomodation costs. Are their
any possible solutions to these problems?

all portuguese IASL members still active - as far as I know, we are few,

(since 2015). BAD, a member since 2003, stopped its membership recently.
Next October, we have 2 good occasions to talk more:
- 1-2 October, Obidos, II Seminar Folio Educa - including the
participation of several other IASL members (Lourense Das, NL; Dianne
Oberg, CA; Albert Boekhorst, NL/BR...) I attach program (it would be

- 14 OctoberLisbon, F. C. Gulbenkian, RBE 20th anniversary. Program here

I think as a global organization IASL should have much more associates,

1 - Disclose some important information about IASL
- How many members has IASL?
- How many new members enter and exit last year?
- Which countries are represented in IASL?
- How many member for each country?
2 - Start a campaign to recruit new members, some ideas:
- get discounts for the new member and the proponent member,
- Make an inquiry to know what school librarians consider more
important to become and remain IASL members,
- try to offer to IASL member added value (e.g. important
documentation produced by IASL),
3 - Consider the option of decrease quotation as a way to recruit
much
more associate members and that way make IASL stronger and have more
founds
(e.g. 100â,¬ / year is an important amount for school librarian in some
countries like Portugal).
