Access to members’ information is determined by the laws of the place where
the association is based, and the association’s own policies.
IFLA’s headquarters have been based in the Netherlands for a number of
years and so the policies are quite stable; IASL’s Secretariat has moved in
the last 20 years from United States to Canada to Australia, and now back
to the United States (IASL is incorporated in Illinois, but the Secretariat
is currently based in Missouri). We need some advise on the local state
laws in the US.

Dear Albert -
This is very useful information from IFLA, because we know that they must
look at this issue of privacy for many, many countries.
As IFLA does, IASL shows the name and contact information for officers
and staff members in the 'open' section of their website.
And I see that IFLA acknowledges new members and their country on the
website & in publications (a great idea for us - on website and in our
Newsletter).
No specific mention there of all IFLA members having access to the full
membership list, so we will look in the link you provided.

From January 2011, IFLA HQ will send all IFLA members and those active
in IFLA's Professional Units a form to indicate his/ her unambiguous
consent for IFLA to use their data for the benefit of the organisation.
This form will also be made available online.
Once the consent process is settled IFLA data (names and contact
details) can be used as follows:
- Publication on the IFLA website and in the IFLA Directory of the
contact details of IFLA Officers, the Standing Committee members, the SIG
Conveners, the Core Activity Officers and extended IFLA Staff;
- Publication of name and country details of (new) IFLA members on
the IFLA website, in the applicable IFLA Sections' newsletters, and in

- Sale of member details is not allowed.
The IFLA Data Protection Policy is endorsed by the IFLA Governing Board,
and legally complies with the Wbp.

Yes, we have been discussing the idea of 'opening the pages' of the
membership list to IASL members for some time now and have run into a few
difficulties, both technical and ethical/privacy.
I believe that the technical issues of access can easily be answered,
thanks to the good skills of our new Secretariat, but resolving the
varying
privacy rules of different countries, the E.U. etc. has been slower.
Members, can you please share links to your country's stated
regulations/laws about internet privacy?
By knowing more of 'the rules' in different countries/regions, the
IASL Board and Executive can make more progress toward our better
communications with one another.
