[ian-reeds-games] damage perspective

I was just wondering about something. In the StarCraft game the damage is
all static. In other words a gauss rifle does six damage no matter what.
I am wondering if making the damage more random would make the game more
fun? It could also make the game units last much longer, which might mean a
lot more units to worry about.

I was just wondering if anyone else had a perspective on the static versus
random damage thing. I was also wondering if anyone was a StarCraft fan, if
random damage bother them or not since it might change the the nature of
gameplay.

As for little StarCraft updates, for those interested, I'm sorry it's taking
me so long. I had tried a couple new ideas, and they failed spectacularly.
So I ended up having to rewrite the whole dang thing. So I'm back retooling
the Terran faction and hopefully if this latest one works as I hope it does
then the next two factions will be easier. I can then start finally making
the campaign.

A little background.
The StarCraft games center around an area called the kaprulu sector.
A mercenary named Jim Raynor with a human telepath named Sarah Kerrigan had
run-ins with the Confederacy. The Confederacy was the human government
ruling the human parts of the sector. Apparently, the Confederacy was
corrupt. So a leader of the rebellion Arcturus mengsk led his group against
the government with Jim and Sarah's aide.
At some point the heroes had an encounter with a monstrous race called zerg.
The zerg are masters of evolution, and are able to transform or grow various
appendages as they had need. They have a habit of infesting other creatures
and using their genetic material, make new and more dangerous zerg warriors.
The zerg are controlled by an overall intelligence called the overmind. It
is very much like a hive of bees or ants.
At some point Jim and Sarah were in trouble and about to be taken by the
zerg. Jim was saved, but Sarah Kerrigan was captured and infested.
Apparently her telepathic abilities allowed her to take control over the
zerg in some fashion.

On top of all this the race called the protoss have been waging total war on
the zerg. They had been forced to bomb entire planets into the Stone Age in
an effort to try to control the infestation.

The protoss are large psychic beings who share a empathic link with each
other. This link is a source of both joy in dread. Some of them follow the
khala, which is a religion of submission to the whole group. Others follow
something called the void, which severs their empathic link, but makes them
individuals with a will of their own.
Naturally, this causes problems in their culture.

It all came to a head when the Terran and protoss join forces to try to stop
the zerg from infesting the protoss home world. Ultimately, this failed.
Because of this failure the protoss fled to a colony of void followers and
they joined forces.

In the endmengsk conquered the Confederacy and formed a new government with
him at the head called the Dominion. Jim Raynor went on the run, and was
eventually imprisoned. Sarah Kerrigan was more or less contained as were the
zerg.

The campaign I've written up takes place 200 years after all that.
It begins with the kaprulu sector suddenly being engulfed within a sphere of
darkness. Is believed to be a supermassive black hole, but no one really
knows for sure.
Escaping from that sector were mengsk and a large portion of the Dominion
military, the remnants of the protoss who fled to a new sector not inhabited
yet by Terran, and the zerg seem to have been utterly destroyed along with
Kerrigan.

Somehow the Dominion military that survived this fear ended up arriving at
Earth and in a series of astonishing tactics defeated a much superior force.
Thusmengsk became Emperor of a Terran Galactic Empire.
The nature of the victory mademengsk seem like another Alexander the great.
People had the sense that he cannot be defeated, and if he was not a God, he
was always at least a Titan. This caused all the other Terran controlled
sectors to fall rapidly into line. The empire is still called the Dominion,
and the mengsk bloodline ruled as tyrannical emperors for the next 200
years.
