Perhaps a quick improvement would be to configure the reference card (
https://i3wm.org/docs/refcard.html) as the default background image.
I don’t have a good overview of how popular the hjkl movement keys are over
i3’s default.
It would be interesting to see what i3 derivatives use by default,
and it would also be interesting to analyze i3 configs available on GitHub.
The modifier key defaults to Alt (Mod1) because that’s the key that is
available on every keyboard,
whereas some ThinkPad models (like the T41) that were common when i3 was
created lacked a Windows key.
We could flip the default around, as nowadays most computers should have a
windows key,
and using the alt key would be as easy as pressing the key once, then
confirming with enter (in i3-config-wizard).
