I'm assuming you've checked the tools->spellcheck->autospellcheck option is on. Try checking that tools->options->language settings->writing aids->options->autospellcheck is also on. Why they would bury it that far down is beyond me. Probably makes since to a programmer, but not to a general user (including me). I would figure the language aids would just have stuff like different character sets for Japanese, Spanish, etc. or for changing the default language of OpenOffice.
