Today, we will explore the 6th Teaching of the Great Person, from Dogen's
Hachidainingaku :
修禅定 Shu Zenjō : to practice the balanced state of Dhyāna.
Dhyāna is the sanskript radical that became Chan in China, then Zen in Japan.
It is therefore the detached state of mind that arises when sitting in
meditation. Buddhism has developed more elaborate theories about the elements
of dhyana, but that is really quite esoteric. Those interested can look at
