Subject: [hsa] Re: Anyone have a trap
So this was back around the late 90s when it happened. Something (later
realized it was a groundhog) had been eating the vegetables in my garden so I
set the trap. When I caught the first skunk I made the naïve mistake of
calling the animal control officer. This was on a Friday. Of course she
didn't call back until Monday. Useless public servant.
I figured I could let it loose in my yard but then I'd likely re-catch it and
at that point didn't realize the culprit was the groundhog. So I approached
the trap with a tarp between me and it. Wrapped it around it and (this is
where everyone will think I am crazy) put it in the trunk of my car. Drove
over to Farm Pond in Framingham and let it loose there.
On Monday afternoon the animal control officer calls me back, explains that
it's not her job and in Massachusetts that it is illegal to relocate a wild
animal and to do so is cruel because they are territorial and will get in
fights with others. She then goes on to say that I could drop the trap into a
stream to drown it. Then she has the audacity to ask what did I do with it.
Told her I released it in the basement of the town hall when I hadn't heard
back from her. She wasn't amused.
This catching a skunk happened like 2 or 3 more times and I did the same thing
again. I'm sure many of you will be like why not just shoot it. First off I'd
go to jail doing that in Ashland. Second, as my wife once said "he likes
animals more than people".
Eventually I smartened up and only had the trap set during the day. No more
skunks caught and did catch several groundhogs. I also put up a chicken wire
fence around the garden. Problem solved.
Anyone other than Greg reload 357 mag that can reply to my other e mail?
Regards,
Tim

Ok, so it begs the question, did you know what to do with the skunk in the
trap?

Yes, I do. I have a Havahart trap that is the size for raccoons. I also have
a smaller size for squirrels.
You're welcome to borrow one or both. I live in Ashland. Contact me directly
if you want to borrow them.
You should know that sometimes you end up catching something different then you
expect. Like a skunk. Don't ask me how I know.

Tim

Subject: [hsa] Anyone have a trap
So I have this problem with what I believe is a raccoon. It tore up some of my
roof shingles. I have made a temporary repair on the roof until the entire
roof is replaced, I'm past due anyway. I want to catch and stop the cause
before it does any further damage, before I go purchase a trap, does anyone
have one I can borrow?
