G'evening all, we had a power supply blow up in the PC that filters all our email over the weekend so I'm only now just working my way through this. Before diving in though, assuming I've done this correctly these links should give you the current lists:

http://www.oasw.co.uk/hrock/evening.php
http://www.oasw.co.uk/hrock/daytime.php

they are taken from the live database so should reflect exactly what Nick has loaded in - sorted by artist.

Onto how the playlists work, basically the system itself is flexible enough to do pretty much anything you want, the challenge is defining exactly what that is.

From an OAS Playout perspective, we not only have the ability to generate as many playlists as you want, according to various criteria (ie. the daytime list, with it's genre "cycling" of Light,Medium,Heavy is totally bespoke for Hastings Rock because that is what Nick originally wanted). I've written a couple of custom ones like that although most stations I deal with tend to use the generic one which picks tracks at random (spacing out the artists) for a predefined selection.

We also have plugins which have accomplished things similar to the playblock concept used by SAM - so in a previous year where we had a single playlist, during the evening slots it automatically replaced all the "light" track with X-tracks. One of the other stations I work with have a quite elaborate set of rules which they use during automation to select tracks from multiple playlists according to a similar scheduling rule.

Actually one of the things that has dropped out of that is that the plugins have (arguably) become too complex such that sometimes I get feedback that they've misbehaved (tracks weren't played out as expected) - often this isn't the case but it's difficult to diagnose if you haven't got a fixed playlist to go and look at. Dropping out of that, about 18 months ago I rolled out a new "Multilist" Playlist generator which (if we want to go ahead with this idea) kind of does exactly what Sarah just said doesn't happen ("No they don’t all go into the same playlist") but gives us the expected result anyway.

The premise is that you generate your playlists as normal so a Daytime, Classic & New Music list. You then use the Multilist generator to generate a single, combined list where you specify the rotation order from which. Arguably, this isn't the best approach to use if you were running a station 24/7 (the plugin approach maybe better) but for us it'll do exactly what we need in the simplest fashion.

Hope that all makes sense.

Anway as i say need to talk will ring you this afternoon if you are
free?

No they don’t all go into the same playlist. All the tracks go into
different playlists and they can be weighted as you please within those
different playlists.

However a ‘playblock’ regulates how the tracks are selected from those
playlists.... it just makes organising music easier.

For instance... a playblock as played out on air would go something
like this

Normal Playlist Track
Normal Playlist Track
Classic Rock Playlist Track
Normal Playlist Track
New Rock A Playlist
Normal Playlist Track
Normal Playlist Track
Brand New Rock Playlist Track

So in this case all the brand new tracks would go into the Brand New
Rock Playlist and hence a track from this playlist would be played
every 8th track.

Its just the way I organise it in SAM and works really well.

i was very difficult and not fulprof to get all the tracks to be heavy
medium light (bunching and duplicates at the end of the list .  and
that was the 1st rule in the list . the 2nd rule is the year i think .
but when i asked Jon about a 3rd rule he said it wouldn't work as the
1st rule takes president.
or matbe you dont mean put them in the same list , we need to talk.

I don’t understand the word ‘Impossible’..... we inserted the new new
tracks in last time in a suitable rotation. Why do we need to insert
them equally.... surely they can be inserted as a rotation rule....
they really don’t have to come up in a certain time each hour.

A playblock would look something like this and just loop in
rotation.... (example)

Playlist Track
Playlist Track
Classic Rock Track
Playlist Track
New Rock A List
Playlist Track
Playlist Track
Brand New Rock

Anyway.... in the meantime the New Rock A List is streaming here

http://listen.samcloud.com/w/73742/Sarahs-New-Rock-Hastings-Rock/?play=y#history

There are actually 214 tracks in the A List

ok Sarah I'm  ready when you are, so just pop round .

i see where you are coming from with the rotation but would be
impossible to schedule them equally in each programme.

I have filtered the 1200 new tracks down a number of times and have two
final lists

A List – Ones I think would probably go into the normal playlist on a
suitably frequent rotation – There are about 230 tracks in this list
B List – Ones I think should go into the normal playlist on a less
frequent rotation – There are about 230 tracks in this list too

I still have a bit of work to do on these tracks but they will be ready
over the coming week. I would suggest I drop round with a memory stick
when they are ready Nick.

If there is a track that isn’t in there that you think should be, I
have probably got it but not included it. Please ask. There are around
700 tracks I haven’t included at all.

I have put a cut on these tracks as February 28th. Subsequent new
tracks will go into my New Rock Show and the best ones post March 1st
will go into the playlist after being played in the New Rock show. With
the New Rock Show potentially on the first day of broadcast then the
best ones will go straight in anyway.

In previous broadcasts we have done this New Music feature during the
show clockwheel.... I have strong opinions on this and I am not a fan
of this approach. I believe strongly that they should go into heavy,
moderate or light rotation in the playlist depending on the track
itself. It can always be introduced as something ‘recently released’
and can be marked as such.

I hope that is all as clear as mud.... I will let you know Nick when
new tracks are ready.
