I had to to replace mine back in May. I used Tim Chen Plumbing. It was a little
shy of $1100. I got a 50 gallon A O Smith with an expansion tank including
parts and labor.

included a 50 gallon GE water heater (12 year warranty & self cleaning),
a thermal expansion tank, and permits. Basically $450 for the water
heater, $135 for permits, and $585 labor.

This was definitely not the cheapest way to get the job done, but it was
urgent at the time.
