From: DeMartino, Steven Sent: Tuesday, July 08, 2008 3:11 PM To: 'HHSC Notice' Subject: ASK-21 Incident Importance: High A Notice to the Membership, Yesterday there was an incident with one of our pilots resulting in significant damage to our #8 ASK-21. The pilot and junior passenger are both okay some small cuts and bruises to the passenger in the front seat. In an effort to inform you I will share some aspects of this event. However, I am sensitive to insuring the flow of information stays in control and that there are defined roles your officers of the board and key members that are in motion. First, I need to say that if you are asked about this event by anyone outside of the immediate membership family it is best to direct them to Sean Murphy or myself. As this is a safety issue we have appointed Sean as the point person, Mark Doyle, Jim Doanne and myself are secondary. Please do not go out of your way to advertise this event, we have a summer operation well underway and appropriate investigations are being conducted. The event occured some time after 2:00pm, PIC was flying from the back seat, the South wind was variable and shifting, the plane became low on finial and the pilot attempted to turn away grounding the plane in the process. The FAA is involved and engaged with the pilot and appropriate representation from HHSC has been assisting. I am impressed that all have been helpful and individuals sticking to their roles. It is common to second guess the pilots actions. I personally think that it is a good and health response to have an internal dialog questioning ourselves about such events and play out in our minds what would you do? The board is presently engaged in exploring our options and contemplating an oppurtunity to purchase a new ASK- 21. We anticipate having worked through much of this by end of the week. If we do secure the purchase of this ASK-21 there will still be a matter of 2-3 weeks that we will have only two ASK-21. We have decided that for the short-term that the two ASK-21's will have priority as commercial flights, until you hear otherwise from one of the board officers, such as Sean Murphy. Hope this helps you feel informed and that you understand that there is a process underway.
