Hi Chris,
S an observation, my ‘Neg no’, index column is set to ‘General’ so when I enter
‘5-6’ I get an assumption that it is ’05-June’. Should we all be converting
that column to ‘Text’?

Hi Christine,
I think I know what is happening here.
At about this time we stopped cutting individual 35mm negatives and putting
them into bags.
Instead we cut the films into strips of six negatives and numbered each strip.
This means that some jobs/assignments started and stopped in the middle of
strips.
Now I hope that I made the template right in that the negative number field
will accept any text.
Please just enter "5-6" or even much greater ranges as a single negative entry.
Let me know if Excel tries to evaluate it as a sum and I'll make a new
template. If not all well and good.
The big problem when went to this system was that we didn't know which actual
negative had been used but it still allowed us to easily locate the job.
The other problem was that it meant storing an awful lot more negatives! They
are in sheets in large ring binders and take up lots of space in the museum
store.
By that stage we weren't processing our own films and the lab wasn't happy
about handling individual negatives as the machine was designed to move strips
through automatically.
At one stage the photographic department of two photographers was only given
one chair (no desk) to share in the office and no other facilities!
Chris

Hello Chris, I am having a bit of difficulty in arranging the latest index on
the spreadsheet. As you can see from the attached, the negative numbers are
grouped together. I started out by listing 1-5 separately with the date
29/12/89 and the assignment as written. However, the next line is for
negatives 5-6. Further down the page, several negative numbers are duplicated
so I don't know which is which, if you see what I mean? For instance is
negative 5 about the fire in Headley or about the Vietnamese family?
Can you clarify please? Many thanks, Christine.
