I've gotten dinged on an IACUC protocol submission because I did a
copy-and-paste from a previous protocol stating the use of povidone and having
it in contact for 30 seconds, but this was not in reference to an amphibian.
With the revision I'm removing reference to 30 second exposure and just stating
that the site will be swabbed and rinsed. In the field with PIT tagging I do
the same as you and have never observed a problem.

Hi Jim,
I don't know of anyone who disinfects skin prior to PIT tag implementation in
hellbenders. I generally use the sterile Biomark PIT tags pre-loaded in
needles. However, when I have had to use the loose tags that I load into a
needle I rub the tag down thoroughly with an alcohol swab and let the needle
soak in ethanol for a minute prior to implant. I'm curious if others have
another methods.
All that being said, on IACUC permits that I've filled out I simply check the
box that says no anesthesia or pre-op skin treatment will be used and have
never run into a problem with it.

This is a question for those that deal with IACUC, or if you have a good answer
to my question. What is an approved method to disinfect hellbender, or
Necturus, skin prior to a PIT tag insertion or clipping for a tissue sample? If
using something like povidone iodine or chlorhexidine how long should the
solution remain on the skin before a rinse? Thanks.
