(4) This is primarily meant for Mr. Guerin, but anyone with relevant info
may respond and receive my gratitude: What exactly _are_ the feelings of
Jackson, Walsh, etc. towards the cuts they had to make to appease Miramax?
I've heard many times that they were pleased with the effect on pacing and
focus on Pauline that resulted from the cuts. But I've also heard that they
were severely pissed off and that "Forgotten Silver" features bitter inside
jokes about forced edits for just this reason. What gives?
I cannot speak for Peter and Fran but I can relate what I heard from them:
- The focus on Pauline came before the N-Z cut: she is still the focus in
that version. P&F cut out scenes of Juliet embarassing a young suitor is
forcing on her themselves for precisely that reason. The scene was in the
script I read and there are stills of it. (The photo of Kate in an
evening dress with the strap falling down her shoulder.)
-Peter is happy with the pacing for what it achieved cinematically and
liked working with the Miramax editor so much he hired him for "The
Frighteners". He also thought the more "humorous" scenes (such as
fantasizing her folks stabbing themselves accidentally or choking at the
dinner table) wer3e a throwback to his "goremeister" years and that they
could play against the film's overall tone. He also conceded that the
scene of Dr. Hulme being fired from canterbury University were more
relevan to the N-Z audience.
-Fran Walsh, however, told me "They emasculated the script" with the
omission of lines such as Mrs Hulme calling Pauline her "foster daughter"
which explains where she got this notion the Hulmes would adopt her after
she found herself orphaned.
Personally, I prefer the "grail" version but it seems that the recut had
both positives and negatives as is often the case with such decisions.
In the end, it becomes a matter of tastes.
