Late this morning (12 Nov) I saw an immature White-winged Scoter at Sandy
River Reservoir (SRR), Prince Edward County (Gates-Bass Rd. access). It was
with a flock of 16 Bufflehead. I don't recall seeing any inland reports for
the species in Virginia so far this fall. This the second scoter species to
show up at SRR this fall; a Black Scoter was there for about two weeks in
late October & early November.
Closer to the dam there was a larger (>40) flock of Bufflehead with a
single Horned Grebe and a Lesser Scaup. A flock of about 20 Gadwall were
also on the lake but were flushed by a boat; a few other water birds were
around as well.
SRR is east of Farmville, south of US 460, and accessible from SR 696 and
SR 640.
