At least Nikon is conducting research in the area of sensor design. Look
e.g. at http://www.dpreview.com/news/0708/07080901nikonimagesensor.asp .
This is a sensor without Bayer pattern.

Nikon produces and sells the machinery that is used to make ICs.
So maybe it is Nikon?
