The issue Atom identified below seems to occur on BSD only.
Looking at code the following getopt option is relied on by hashcash:
Just to say, this problem also shows on MacOS X, which is BSD based.
I'm not entirely sure how to fix the Makefile efficiently - presumably
we still want to use the system's GNU getopt where it's available, and
if we're not using autoconf, it's hard to tell the difference.
Autoconf seems to be tolerably easy to set up, though.
