A note from the coordinator...
January is just flying by! I hope you have been finding time to enjoy your
favorite ham radio activities. There are so many options available in this
hobby that there is sure to be at least one thing each ham enjoys doing! It's a
good idea to try out something new in the hobby just to see what peaks your
interest.
Along with the release of the new On the Air magazine, the ARRL is doing a new
podcast to take a deeper look at some of the topics and projects included in
the magazine. You can check it out at http://www.arrl.org/on-the-air-podcast.
There are still a few extra items from the latest merchandise list. If you want
to see if something is available for you to order, please contact Pemdy.
[Photo of stack of new gray sweatshirts with the Handiham Logo embroidered on
them.]
If you haven't already signed up to receive an application for the 2020 Radio
Camp, don't forget to let Pemdy know that you want to be on the list. Pemdy has
been busy getting the applications ready to go out next month. Camp will
include license class instruction along with lots of hands-on amateur radio and
training in science, technology, math, and engineering. Instructors are
experienced ham radio operators from many locations who come together each
summer to make this great experience a reality for campers of all abilities.
The week will also give campers the opportunity to learn from each other while
enjoying traditional camp activities like swimming, meals in the great
outdoors, and nightly campfires.

the Handiham Program office, and we do not answer, please leave a message. When
you leave that message, don't forget to leave your name, phone number, call
sign, if you have one, and the reason for your call. Also, if you send an
email, please include your name along with your call sign, and the reason for
your email to speed up the response time. As always, if you need to update
anything like your contact information, call sign, license class, membership,
or members only log-in information, you can email us at
handiham@xxxxxxxxxx<mailto:handiham@xxxxxxxxxx>.
In the E-Letter, there is an article about the Logitech G adaptive gaming kit,
another article about hams assisting in Puerto Rico, and the next part of a new
interview with Jerry Kloss, N0VOE. Of course, you can also find the regular
articles you see here each week.
Do you have a story to share about assistive technology or ham radio related
activities? Please send your articles and stories via email to

Logitech G Adaptive Gaming Kit
[photo adapted switch access devices as part of the Logitech G adaptive gaming
kit]
Logitech teamed up with Microsoft and Xbox to make the additional switch access
devices needed to make the adapted gaming controller useful for people with
different abilities. The kit has buttons in various sizes that require varying
levels of touch that can be configured and attached in the way that the user
needs to function at their best. This allows people to be able to interact with
their peers and engage in fun activities, improving neurological outcomes while
increasing social interaction. You can learn more at:

From the Mailbag
[Photo of mail carrier with mail bag and letter.]
Hi,
I have my new ham radio site at ka3ttt.net. I wanted to find a widget to
display sunspot activity and HF propagation conditions, such as the one found
on qrz.com, but it presents the data in a graphical format. I wondered if
anyone knows of a similar widget that presents the data in a text-based format
accessible to screen reader users?
Thanks and 73,
Austin, KA3TTT

Hello Lucinda
I've always been able to use the EchoLink app on my iPad until I upgraded to
iOS 13. Now, it will not work. Has anyone else had this problem, and if so,
could someone send me some tips to correct it? I would appreciate it very much.
Thanks,
Ray, N3DQD

Interview of the Week
This week, we welcome back Jerry Kloss, N0VOE, who agreed to come and do
another interview for 2020, even though he really wasn't sure he could improve
on the last one from 2018.
[Photo of arm in suit jacket with hand holding a large communications
microphone.]
JK: If I believe in something, I enjoy promoting it. It sounds like you have
some really sharp, young folks. You know, that's what it takes. It takes a new
generation of energy to run something like that. I'm sure you figured that out
in the short time you've been in charge.
JK: I would like to sit in on operating skills and just listen. You know, it's
kind of like, I've run the table, and now I want to hear young people keeping
this going.
JK: That's one area that I really enjoyed is operating skills. I liked to take
the mic-shy person in the room-it's almost like the mic had a disease on it-and
then by the end of the week, you get them going. That's such a thrill to see
them gain that confidence within a week's time. You know when they go home that
they will have fun with the hobby! That's where you can find me hanging out,
wherever that's held. So, I'll look forward to that.
LM: Yes, we would love to have you. I know there's a lot of campers who would
love to catch up with you and a new generation of campers who would love to get
to know you.
JK: Well, thank you.
LM: Speaking of that, it's 2020, and we are looking at the next ten years with
the Handiham Program. What are we going to do?
JK: Yes, it's amazing that you were able to keep that afloat. It's sure nice to
see because it's such a wonderful program.
JK: There's another guy that, boy, you talk about contributing to the
program-Matt.
LM: He's done a lot over the years.
JK: We probably wouldn't be on the air without him.
LM: He was playing and singing every night at camp, plus sometimes during the
day. We kept him busy.
JK: Yes. He can make a bonfire very special.
LM: Yeah, we very much enjoyed that. And then we had another camper this last
year who is incredibly multi-talented, Lynelle Tyler. She can play multiple
instruments, and she can really sing!
JK: Oh, my! That will be fun!
LM: Maybe she will come back this year. I know you would love to hear her. And
when you get her and Matt together, wow!
JK: I'll bet that's fun!
LM: Oh, yeah!
JK: Well, is there any studying that's done at camp, or is it all just fun?
LM: Oh, there's lots of studying, lots of class.
JK: Do you have a similar schedule day to day like we had, where we had some
free time after lunch?
LM: Yeah, it's pretty similar to that. We start again at 3:15 just because it
gives people enough time after lunch to have a little bit of a rest if they
need it and then have time to participate in camp activities. And during that
time, our volunteers get a break.
JK: Yeah, that works good.
LM: And then we do lots of boat rides!
JK: I love boat rides.
LM: That's popular.
JK: I listened to the activities from home here, and I thought, there's
somebody helping people run the net, you could hear the energy when they were
helping them.
LM: Yeah, Tom was doing that other than on Friday when I helped Rachel. But Tom
did a lot of nets where if they needed help, Tom would talk them through it.
JK: Sure.
LM: Tom has lots of experience.
JK: Well, as a teacher, you can't beat that. Will they be back this year?
LM: Oh, yes. Tom and Sue will be back this year. And Sue has experience
teaching too.
JK: I've benefitted a lot from the Handiham Program. I haven't given back
nearly as much as I've gotten in return, but I keep working on it.
LM: That Handiham Program has done so much for a lot of people over the years.
JK: It sure has. Anyway, we'll look forward to watching the calendar. July will
be here before we know it. You can't beat that Minnesota Camp Courage North.
There is something special there.
LM: That's why we wanted to go back to Courage North, because there is
something special about that camp. Even our new volunteers commented about the
atmosphere up there.
JK: There's nothing like the loon calling.
LM: Oh, yes. And it was so great to have Dr. Dave back and people like that.
Stay tuned for the next part of our interview with Jerry airing next week.

ARES Volunteers Establish "Plan B" Communication Network in Puerto Rico
[Photo of ARES logo.]
ARES volunteers are prepared to provide communications in the event that
seismic activity wipes out existing communication methods. Hams have stations
set up so they can respond if needed. Local Red Cross officials who are
currently using commercial communications know they can count on amateur radio
when necessary to maintain support for their vital efforts. You can learn more

A Dip in the Pool
[drawing of person studying]
It's time to test our knowledge by taking a dip in the question pool...
Let's go to the Technician Class pool this week to a question about circuits.
T5A14 asks: In which type of circuit is voltage the same across all components?
Possible answers are:
A. Series.
B. Parallel.
C. Resonant.
D. Branch.
In a parallel circuit, there are multiple paths through which the current
flows. Remember, the voltage is the same across each component in a parallel
circuit, making answer B the correct choice. Of course, with multiple parallel
current paths, the circuit will have more total current than with any single
current path.

Equipment Connection
[Photo of Icom IC-7200 with LDG auto-tuner and power supply.]
Equipment connections are happening, and the list is open! If you have a
request for the Equipment Connection, contact me, leaving your name and phone
number. I will call you to discuss your request. Please note that it may take
several days for a return call due to all the other things going on in the
Handiham Program. If you don't hear back from me after two weeks, you may
contact me a second time. Additionally, if you have received any equipment from
the Handiham Program during the last 12 months, you will automatically be
placed at the bottom of the list so that others can also participate in the
Equipment Connection.
Many thanks to the numerous people who have offered equipment for Handiham
Members. If you have equipment that you would like to donate to a Handiham
Program member, please email Lucinda at

Help Needed
[Photo of note with the words help needed written on it.]
The Handiham Program needs contributors to Handiham World. Do you have a
particular interest in amateur radio that you would like to share with others?
Maybe you have a particular mode or band you like to operate and have learned a
lot about. Or maybe you have some great stories to share from your experiences
in the amateur radio hobby. Put your writing skills to work for Handiham World
by sending your submissions to
Lucinda.Moody@xxxxxxxxxx<mailto:Lucinda.Moody@xxxxxxxxxx>.
We are always looking for more readers, including some with a background in
teaching in STEM related fields, especially if you have also worked with
students requiring accommodations. We also need some readers with a background
in teaching in STEM related fields, especially if you have also worked with
students requiring accommodations. This volunteer position requires you to use
your own equipment to record, however, we will provide the reading materials.
If you or someone you know would like to try reading material for the members
only section, please contact me for more information on how to submit a demo
recording.
We need help updating our available resources for members. If you are blind and
enjoy using your ham radio or assistive technology related devices, your
assistance is especially needed. It would be a big help to your fellow Handiham
Members if you would record a tutorial or product review. These need to be sent
in Mp3 format, and the Handiham Program reserves the right to edit the
recordings as needed before publishing in the Members Only section of the
Handiham.org website. Please contact me at
Lucinda.Moody@xxxxxxxxxx<mailto:Lucinda.Moody@xxxxxxxxxx> or 612-775-2290 if
you have any questions.
I want to say a big thank you to those who have made or volunteered to make
tutorials for the Members Only portion of the website. We have already had a
number of members step up to offer their services, and their help is greatly
appreciated! We also have some new readers who are working on some books, so
keep watching for website updates as we add more content.
