To avoid potential problems, I opted to use a form that submits the data to an email, and was then entering the data into the nodes manually; very inefficient, but not that bad for a few events a year. This problem should not exist in Drupal 5 or 6, If/when the website is upgraded, the workflow for conference submission could then be changed so that the nodes are published immediately after submission or go into a queue for revision prior to publication.
