Hi,

I am a 3rd year CS student with an interest in Haiku. For my dissertation, I’m
considering a reimplementation/rewrite of Tracker. The aim of the rewrite would
be to bring features many users expect from many modern browsers (integrated
search functionality (Do we really need Find… as a separate feature?),
hierarchal browsing, quick links side bar, etc etc). I am not planning to
remove any features, or change any existing metaphors (such as spacial browsing
mode), the idea is to add features and generally bring the file manager up to
modern standards.

Obviously nothing is set in stone ATM, I just wanted to see what Haiku devs
thought of this idea. Criticisms and comments are welcome.

I would be all for it. The things you touch on, like spacial browsing, show to me that you have done at least the minimal research into what Haiku users may love about their Tracker. If you indeed want to preserve spacial browsing, it would be an interesting challenge how to integrate these other features. A side-bar for example. I think for something as crucial as Tracker, where everyone has their opinion, I would develop a minimal concept for the overall design in private, with mockups, and then present it for public discussion. From the input received, one could improve the concept iteratively. Once there is a plan that has the backing of many via public discussion, I think maybe more developers would help even. Maybe nobody is working on Tracker because any change in usability could draw the attention of the angry mob with the pitchforks.

Best regard,
-Stephan
