And on which consideration should it exactly match?
Should those be considered in regard of US law?

Since some patents expired at different dates in US and elsewhere (the
Unisys GIF one comes to mind).

Why not European ?

But, european practice or law?

Because in Europe, software patents are definitely illegal, but they are
granted by thousands by the EU Patent Office which isn't even an EU
institution.

I don't want to waste time on sorting this out, and in fine
acknowledging a system which I consider utterly broken.

Even in the US people are starting to recognize this, including the
Supreme Court, so I don't see any need to go backwards in history.
