Well, since there are no insets it doesn't take too much space (one
pixel border on each side). The problem is more that I was not really
happy with my own version (grey bar) either.

There's a small close button on each notification. There was one on the
group header too, currently it's gone as well as the collapse button.
This one may be rather useful, for example when you connect an IM
application and get a notice for every single contact. It could also be
a way to get more control on the notifications, such as "stop notifying
stuff for this group".
