You might also try a nightly build from http://haiku-files.org to see if
anything has improved since the last Alpha release.
FWIW, VMWare emulates a different sound chip and uses the host OS's sound
subsystem to play through, it doesn't expose the one you have in your
computer directly to the guest OS.
