How is this supposed to work? The subtitles can only work if there is
 some timing information built-in, otherwise the media player has no idea
 when to show each line.

SRT files are plain text with timing information. It seems hard to make
 it any simpler than that:
http://www.matroska.org/technical/specs/subtitles/srt.html ;(this is what
 MediaPlayer parses)

Are your files in a different format? Can you provide a sample file for
 testing in that case?
