I installed the latest nightly build hoping that my issues with the back-
light would have been fixed (I wasn't sure the driver was the culprit) and
much to my surprise...it works.
I checked to see if the radeon driver/accelerant is used instead of vesa,
and yes :-)
I'm really curious to know what caused this problem.
