 This is merely the 'calling code' to the driver which actually handles
 modesetting. If a mode can't be set therefore you need to search in the
 driver that's in use on your system.

 In this case the fault is in the nvidia driver, specifically for NV44
 architecture gfx cards, that are incorporated on AMD CPU based mainboards,
 I guess now some ten years ago. I found the reason meanwhile: these
 mainboards have a different Crystal base frequency than other nVidia
 cards. Will patch the driver asap.
