Menus can also contain items which indicate the state of a feature, such
as the visibility of a tool window. The preferred method is to place a
checkmark beside the item indicating the positive state. This is less
confusing than to dynamically change menu item labels and has the
advantage that it can be used for choosing from more than two states at
the expense of screen space.
----
Besides, the UI is a bit confusing currently because the bar should be
hidden when it's empty, and in that case the menu should be disabled until
you create a bookmark (this is because the empty bar looks confusing). But
this is also broken.
