hrev52919 shows no video

I use VESA as the intel extreme video driver is broken on this hardware.
Booting hrev52919 shows no splash screen and no Desktop.
I can ssh in and issue a screenmode command :
screenmode 1280 1024, 16 bits, 60 Hz
Without accepting the setting and letting it reset to the currend mode
this resets the video controller to my normal 1280 1024, 32 bits, 60 Hz
mode. Now the Desktop then displays.
